By the seventh and eighth decades of life, maximal voluntary contractile strength decreases on average by 20-40% for both men and women across proximal and distal muscles. Reduced muscle mass accounts for the majority of strength loss. Sarcopenia prevalence may reach up to 30% for individuals aged 60 and older. Contributing mechanisms include loss of skeletal muscle fibers secondary to reduced motoneuron counts, reduced physical activity, altered hormonal status, lower total caloric and protein intake, inflammatory mediators, and impaired protein synthesis.

Why it matters
