Effects of high dosage delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol on sleep patterns in man.

What was done
Electroencephalography and eye movements were recorded in experienced marijuana users during sleep across placebo baseline, THC administration, and withdrawal. Four subjects were evaluated across 3 baseline nights, 3 nights at 70 mg/day of THC, the final 3 nights of 2 weeks at 210 mg/day of THC, and the first 3 nights of withdrawal. Three additional subjects were evaluated only during the 210 mg/day and withdrawal periods (total n = 7).
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical values, effect sizes, or variance estimates. THC administration significantly reduced eye movement activity during REM sleep and, to a lesser extent, REM sleep duration. Drug withdrawal caused increases above baseline for both REM metrics, with a larger rebound effect for eye movement. Stage 4 sleep showed a non-significant trend toward increasing while on THC, but decreased significantly on withdrawal, an effect that was marked only on the first withdrawal night.
Why it matters
The study shows that high doses of THC alter sleep architecture by suppressing REM sleep, and that abrupt withdrawal leads to measurable REM rebound and short-term disruption of deep sleep.
Limits
The sample size was extremely small (n = 7, with only 4 completing all phases), the study lacked a randomized control group, participants were restricted to experienced marijuana users, and the abstract omits quantitative measurements and variance data.
