What was done
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to assess brain activation in young adults (ages 18–35) and older adults (ages 62–79) during the successful encoding of positive, negative, and neutral objects (e.g., a sundae, a grenade, a canoe).
What was found
No sample sizes, p-values, or effect sizes were reported in the abstract. Both age groups recruited the amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex during the successful encoding of positive and negative items. Both groups also showed valence-specific activity: right fusiform activation was greatest for negative items, whereas left prefrontal and temporal activation was greatest for positive items. The only age difference emerged during successful encoding of positive items, where older adults demonstrated greater activity in the medial prefrontal cortex and cingulate gyrus than younger adults.
Why it matters
These findings suggest that the basic neural network underlying emotional memory remains preserved across healthy aging, while older adults' mnemonic advantage for positive material may be driven by engagement of self-referential cortical regions.
Limits
The abstract does not provide the sample size (n), effect sizes, or quantitative data. As a cross-sectional laboratory fMRI study comparing two discrete age cohorts, it cannot establish longitudinal developmental trajectories or determine real-world behavioral equivalence.
