They tested the behavioral consequences of optogenetic versus electrical stimulation of VMHvl neurons, applied pharmacogenetic silencing during inter-male encounters, and recorded neural activity via immediate early gene analysis and single-unit recordings during social interactions.
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical values or effect sizes. Optogenetic, but not electrical, stimulation of VMHvl neurons induced male mice to attack males, females, and inanimate objects. Pharmacogenetic silencing of the VMHvl reversibly inhibited inter-male aggression. Neuronal recordings identified overlapping but distinct subpopulations active during fighting and mating, with attack-activated neurons showing inhibition during mating.
Why it matters
This study functionally defines the VMHvl as an essential hypothalamic locus for aggression in mice and provides a cellular mechanism for how aggressive and mating behaviors mutually compete.
