Awareness of prediabetes--United States, 2005-2010.
Level 4 - case-series / case-control
Repeated cross-sectional survey of national data (NHANES)
What was done
CDC analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) across 2005–2010 to examine changes in awareness of prediabetes and associated factors among US adults aged 20 years and older.
What was found
Prediabetes awareness among affected adults was approximately 7% in 2005–2006 and rose to approximately 11% in 2009–2010. Estimated awareness remained <14% across all population subgroups and different levels of healthcare access or use from 2005 to 2010.
Why it matters
Despite the availability of evidence-based lifestyle programs that reduce the risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes, nearly 90% of US adults with prediabetes remain unaware of their diagnosis.
Limits
The abstract does not report the total participant sample size. Cross-sectional survey data cannot assess longitudinal health outcomes following diagnosis or awareness, and self-reported awareness may be subject to recall bias.
