What was done
Across two studies, participants took part in a guided art museum tour where they were instructed to either observe objects or photograph them. Tested conditions included photographing an object in its entirety versus zooming in to capture a specific part of the object. Subsequent memory tests evaluated object recognition, memory for specific visual details, and recall of object locations within the museum.
What was found
Participants who photographed whole objects remembered fewer objects, fewer object details, and fewer object locations compared to participants who only observed the objects without photographing them. However, when participants zoomed in to photograph a specific part of an object, recognition and detail memory were not impaired; memory for non-zoomed features was just as strong as for zoomed-in features. The abstract reports no numerical values, sample sizes, or statistical test metrics.
Why it matters
This paper demonstrates the "photo-taking-impairment effect," showing that capturing full images can degrade memory encoding, while showing that focused visual engagement (such as zooming in on details) can mitigate this cognitive offloading effect.
