Role of grandparenting in postmenopausal women's cognitive health: results from the Women's Healthy Aging Project.

Researchers evaluated the relationship between the frequency of minding grandchildren and cognitive performance among 186 postmenopausal Australian women from the prospective Women's Healthy Aging Project. Cognition was assessed using the Symbol-Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), the California Verbal Learning Test, and the Tower of London.
What was found
Time spent minding grandchildren significantly predicted differences in SDMT performance (P < 0.01). Women who minded grandchildren 1 day per week achieved the highest cognitive scores across most tests and had significantly higher California Verbal Learning Test immediate recall performance (P < 0.05). Conversely, minding grandchildren 5 or more days per week predicted significantly lower SDMT performance (P < 0.05). Specific numerical test scores and effect estimates were not reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
This study indicates a non-linear relationship between caregiving and cognitive aging, suggesting moderate weekly grandparenting relates to better cognitive outcomes while intensive caregiving relates to poorer processing speed and working memory.
Limits
The sample was relatively small (n = 186) and limited to postmenopausal Australian women.
