What was done
Authors conducted a retrospective matched case-control study evaluating predictors of scientific misconduct and honest error. They collected bibliographic and personal data on co-authors of papers retracted (N=611) or corrected (N=2,226) in 2010–2011, along with control papers matched by journal and issue (N=1,181 for retractions; N=4,285 for corrections). Predictors of retractions (as a proxy for misconduct) and corrections were analyzed using conditional logistic regression.
What was found
The abstract does not report numerical effect sizes, odds ratios, or p-values. Directionally, retractions were more likely among early-career researchers, in countries lacking research integrity policies, in countries offering cash rewards for publications, and in academic environments where mutual criticism is restricted. The hypothesis that males are more prone to misconduct was not supported. High-impact, highly productive researchers and those in countries with perceived high publication pressure were less likely to have retractions and more likely to issue corrections.

This study challenges the common assumption that high publication pressure is the primary driver of scientific misconduct. It suggests policy interventions should focus on national integrity frameworks, mentoring, and transparent academic environments rather than targeting publication volume alone.
Limits
The abstract provides no point estimates, odds ratios, or confidence intervals. Retraction is an imperfect proxy for misconduct, as many instances of misconduct go undetected or unretracted, and retractions occasionally occur for non-misconduct reasons.
