What was done
High-density whole-night sleep EEG was recorded in 24 long-term meditators and 24 meditation-naive controls in a sound-attenuated sleep research facility. Meditators completed two 8-hour sessions of either mindfulness-based meditation or compassion/loving-kindness meditation. The meditation-naive cohort underwent repeated baseline recordings to evaluate time effects on sleep EEG activity.
What was found
Following the intervention, meditators exhibited an increase in non-REM sleep low-frequency oscillatory activity (1-12 Hz, centered around 7-8 Hz) across prefrontal and left parietal electrodes throughout the night. This increase peaked early in the night and extended into the gamma range (25-40 Hz) during the third sleep cycle. No differences were detected between mindfulness and compassion meditation styles, and no changes occurred across time points in the naive control group. Prefrontal-parietal changes correlated with lifetime meditation experience. Specific numerical effect sizes were not reported in the abstract.
