What was done
Retrospective review evaluating mortality causes among captive red wolves (Canis rufus) dying between 1997 and 2012 within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Red Wolf Recovery Program and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Red Wolf Species Survival Plan. Records including gross necropsy, histology, or both were reviewed across neonatal, juvenile, and adult age classes.
What was found
Of 378 captive red wolves that died over the 15-year study period, 259 had evaluable necropsy and/or histology records. Neonatal deaths were primarily attributed to parental trauma, stillbirth, or pneumonia. Juvenile mortality (aged 30 days to 6 months) was low, totaling 12 deaths. In adults, the leading cause of death was neoplasia (predominantly epithelial neoplasms, carcinomas, and adenocarcinomas), followed by gastrointestinal diseases (specifically gastric dilation and volvulus, inflammatory bowel disease, and gastrointestinal perforations). Exact case counts per disease category were not reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
These findings provide baseline epidemiological and pathological data to inform health monitoring and veterinary management in captive breeding programs for critically endangered red wolves, where natural causes of death differ substantially from wild populations dominated by human-related trauma.
Limits
Evaluative pathology records were unavailable for 119 of 378 deceased animals (31.5%), introducing potential reporting bias. The abstract does not quantify exact numbers for specific disease diagnoses, nor does it present statistical associations between inbreeding coefficients and specific pathological findings. Findings from captive wolves cannot be generalized to wild populations.
