Researchers compared fathers of daughters and fathers of sons across two domains: naturalistic, real-world everyday caregiving behavior (including language use and play interactions) and neural responses in emotion- and reward-processing areas (medial and lateral orbitofrontal cortex [OFC]) during exposure to photographic stimuli of child facial expressions.
What was found

Fathers of daughters showed more attentive engagement, sang more, used more analytical language and words related to sadness and the body, and exhibited stronger medial and lateral OFC responses to happy facial expressions from their child. Fathers of sons engaged in more rough-and-tumble play (RTP), used more achievement language, and showed stronger medial OFC responses to neutral child facial expressions. Medial OFC activation to happy faces correlated negatively with RTP, while medial OFC activation to neutral faces correlated positively with RTP specifically in fathers of boys.
