Visual Attention to Suffering After Compassion Training Is Associated With Decreased Amygdala Responses.

What was done

Healthy adults were randomized to 2 weeks of compassion training or reappraisal training. Investigators measured BOLD fMRI responses and concurrent eye-tracking looking times before and after training while participants actively engaged in their assigned practice during exposure to images depicting human suffering or non-suffering.

What was found

The abstract reports no numeric values, effect sizes, or confidence intervals. Directionally, increases in visual preference for suffering after compassion training were associated with decreased amygdala activation, a pattern absent in the reappraisal group. Increased visual preference for suffering was also associated with decreased activation in the anterior insula and orbitofrontal cortex in the compassion group (with the opposite pattern in the reappraisal group). Across both time points, engaging in compassion led to greater visual attention preference for suffering than engaging in reappraisal.

Why it matters

The findings demonstrate a neurobiological mechanism whereby compassion training enhances visual orientation toward suffering while simultaneously buffering against aversive neural reactivity and empathic distress.

Limits

The abstract omits sample size, participant demographics, and all numeric statistics or effect sizes. The trial evaluated a short intervention period (2 weeks) during active task engagement in an fMRI environment, which may not reflect long-term or spontaneous emotional processing.
