Seventeen healthy young participants (8 females) underwent a counterbalanced within-subject experiment testing a head-mounted LED light therapy device. Participants were exposed for 2 hours before habitual sleep time to either blue-enriched light (1,500 lx) or a lower-intensity red-light control condition (150 lx). Melatonin secretion, psychomotor vigilance task reaction times, salivary cortisol levels, and subjective discomfort were assessed.
What was found
Blue-enriched light significantly reduced melatonin secretion and reduced reaction times on the psychomotor vigilance task compared to the red-light control.
