What was done

Eighty healthy adult men and women participated in individual 2-hour experimental sessions using the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) to induce acute psychosocial stress. Voice recordings, polygraph measures (skin temperature and hand movement), and salivary cortisol were collected across baseline, stress, and relaxation phases.

What was found

The abstract reports systematic increases in voice pitch (mean, minimum, and fundamental frequency variability) and salivary cortisol alongside decreases in skin temperature and hand movement during stress across both sexes. However, cortisol and skin temperature only weakly predicted voice pitch changes during stress. The abstract reports directional shifts and associations without specific numerical values, effect sizes, or p-values.

Why it matters

The study shows that although acute psychosocial stress activates behavioral, autonomic, and endocrine systems simultaneously, cross-modality intra-individual response coherence is weak. Automated or behavioral stress detection cannot reliably proxy underlying biological stress responses.

Limits

The sample was limited to 80 healthy adults tested in an artificial laboratory environment, limiting generalizability to chronic stress or clinical populations. Exact quantitative metrics, variance estimates, and effect sizes are omitted from the abstract.
