Twelve healthy young females participated in a randomized crossover study with three evening sessions (18:30 to 00:30). Researchers measured melatonin levels, subjective sleepiness, body temperature, and skin blood flow across three lighting conditions: (A) continuous dim light, (B) dim light with a late-evening light exposure (22:30-23:30; 750 lx, 4000 K), and (C) the same late-evening light exposure preceded by an early-evening bright light exposure (18:30-21:00; 1200 lx, 4000 K).

What was found

Late-evening light exposure reduced melatonin levels and subjective sleepiness and led to larger skin temperature gradients compared to dim light. Prior exposure to 2.5 hours of early-evening bright light mitigated these disruptive physiological and alerting effects. Why it matters

Prior photic history appears to modulate the circadian and alerting sensitivity to subsequent light. Early-evening or daytime bright light may buffer against the sleep-disrupting effects of late-evening screen and artificial light exposure.
