Authors conducted a PROSPERO-registered systematic review and meta-analysis of studies evaluating virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) for social anxiety disorder (SAD) or related phobias. Eligible studies had at least three VRET sessions and a minimum of 10 participants. VRET significantly reduced social anxiety scores at post-intervention (Hedges' g = -0.86, 95% CI -1.04 to -0.68), 3 months (-1.03, 95% CI -1.35 to -0.72), 6 months (-1.14, 95% CI -1.39 to -0.89), and 12 months (-0.74, 95% CI -1.05 to -0.43). Compared to in vivo exposure, VRET had similar post-intervention efficacy and dropout rates, but became inferior at longer follow-up points (exact comparative statistics not provided in abstract).
