The Effectiveness of Self-Guided Virtual-Reality Exposure Therapy for Public-Speaking Anxiety.

Thirty-two university students (27 completers) with high self-reported public-speaking anxiety participated in two weekly self-guided virtual-reality exposure therapy (VRET) sessions. Each 20-minute session required delivering a speech in a virtual classroom where participants could increase social threat parameters (audience size, audience reaction, speech prompts, and personal salience) every 4 minutes. Heart rate and self-reported anxiety and arousal were recorded during intervals, and psychometric assessments were administered post-session and at 1-month follow-up.
