Shift work is significantly and positively associated with possible gastro-esophageal reflux disease: A meta-analysis study.

What was done
A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted across three databases to evaluate the relationship between shift work patterns and possible gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms. Pooled prevalence odds ratios (ORs) and standard errors were calculated from 4 included studies. Subgroup analyses were performed by shift schedule type (night shift, rotating shift) and sex.
What was found
Shift work was significantly associated with higher odds of possible GERD compared to non-shift work (pooled OR 1.53; 95% CI 1.33–1.77, p = 0.003). In subgroup analyses, increased odds were observed for both night shifts (OR 1.39; 95% CI 1.16–1.66) and rotating shifts (OR 1.83; 95% CI 1.44–2.33). Statistically significant positive associations were also present in shift-working men (OR 1.28; 95% CI 1.03–1.60) and combined-gender cohorts (OR 1.75; 95% CI 1.45–2.11).
Why it matters
This review provides quantitative synthesis linking irregular work schedules—especially rotating shifts—to elevated risk of GERD symptoms, highlighting an important target for occupational health management.
Limits
The meta-analysis included only 4 studies, and the total participant count was not reported in the abstract. All included data were observational (prevalence odds ratios), preventing causal conclusions. Outcomes relied on possible GERD symptom reports rather than objective diagnostic confirmation such as endoscopy or pH monitoring.
