Sleeping for One Week on a Temperature-Controlled Mattress Cover Improves Sleep and Cardiovascular Recovery.

What was done
In a free-living within-subject study, 54 participants slept for eight nights wearing a home sleep test device: four nights with an active temperature-controlled mattress cover (Eight Sleep Pod ON) and four nights without active regulation (Pod OFF). Nightly sleep architecture, sleeping heart rate, and heart rate variability were measured across more than 300 total recorded nights.
What was found
Compared to Pod OFF, cooler temperatures in the first half of the night increased deep sleep in men (+14 minutes, +22% mean change, p = 0.003) and REM sleep in women (+9 minutes, +25% mean change, p = 0.033). Warm temperatures in the second half of the night increased light sleep in men (+23 minutes, +19% mean change, p = 0.023). Overall, Pod ON significantly reduced sleeping heart rate (-2% mean change) and increased heart rate variability (+7% mean change, both p < 0.01).
Why it matters
Dynamic, phase-specific bed temperature regulation can selectively alter sleep stage distribution and provide modest improvements in nocturnal autonomic cardiovascular recovery.
Limits
The abstract does not state whether condition order was randomized or counterbalanced. The study had a small sample size (n = 54), monitored only four nights per condition, used a proprietary commercial device, and evaluated participants in a free-living setting without clinical polysomnography verification.
