The review identified 98 eligible peer-reviewed articles. The abstract reports no numerical pooled metrics or effect sizes. Synthesized literature was organized into five themes: biological correlates, psychological functioning, developmental characteristics, clinical populations/psychopathology, and therapeutic interventions. Higher emotional granularity was associated with favorable biological and psychological indicators and improved social and functional outcomes. Conversely, lower emotional granularity was reported across multiple clinical groups relative to non-clinical populations, including individuals with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance use, schizophrenia, PTSD, personality disorders, and eating disorders.

This review synthesizes evidence showing that emotional granularity is a transdiagnostic marker relevant across diverse psychiatric conditions and health domains. It provides a conceptual map to guide future mechanistic research and intervention design.
