What was done
Across four experiments, participants processed unrelated common nouns under different encoding instructions: pleasantness processing, ancestral grasslands survival processing, or story processing. Experiment 1 used full word lists for listing pleasant/unpleasant aspects, survival utility, or creating a short story. Experiment 2 presented words sequentially at a fixed rate for similar tasks. Experiment 3 required rating sequentially presented words for pleasantness, survival relevance, or ease of inclusion in a story. Experiment 4 added a combined survival-story condition. Incidental recall was tested after a brief delay across all experiments.
