Across three behavioral experiments, researchers tested whether semantic correspondence influences the Colavita visual dominance effect—where participants fail to report the auditory component of simultaneously presented audiovisual stimuli. Experiment 1 tested the baseline effect using words. Experiment 2 manipulated semantic congruence by pairing visual pictures with matching or non-matching auditory sounds or words (e.g., cat picture paired with cat sound/word vs. dog sound/word). Experiment 3 tested the impact of using visual and auditory stimuli drawn from entirely different semantic categories.
What was found
