What was done

The authors reviewed current theories and mechanisms of human genital organogenesis. They evaluated models of vaginal epithelial derivation using developmental anomalies, including congenital androgen insensitivity, lower vaginal agenesis, in utero diethylstilbestrol (DES) exposure, and a single case report of congenital absence of the upper vagina managed with surgical reconstruction.

What was found

The abstract reports no controlled quantitative data or comparative statistics. Undifferentiated genital tract development proceeds until the 9th week (32 mm). Normal vaginal squamous epithelium contains abundant glycogen indicating urogenital sinus origin, whereas glycogen-deficient squamous metaplasia and adenosis reflect Müllerian origin. In the reported case of upper vaginal absence, laparotomy identified normal uterus, tubes, and ovaries; following vaginal plastic surgery, the patient achieved 3 pregnancies by age 32. Seven published cases of prostatic utricle adenocarcinoma resembling endometrial carcinoma were also noted.
