What was done
Patients with bilateral amygdala damage (sparing ventromedial prefrontal cortex [VMF]) were compared to patients with bilateral VMF damage (sparing the amygdala). Decision-making performance was assessed using the gambling task, and electrodermal activity (skin conductance responses, SCR) was measured to index somatic state activation. Participants were also evaluated on a Pavlovian conditioning experiment pairing visual stimuli with an aversive loud sound.
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical values or statistical effect sizes. Qualitatively, patients with amygdala damage and patients with VMF damage were both impaired on the gambling task and both failed to generate anticipatory SCRs while pondering risky choices. However, VMF patients generated SCRs when receiving a reward or punishment (play money), whereas amygdala patients did not. In the Pavlovian conditioning task, VMF patients acquired conditioned SCRs to visual stimuli paired with the aversive sound, whereas amygdala patients failed to acquire conditioned responses.
Why it matters
The study shows that although both structures are critical for emotion-guided decision-making, they play distinct roles: the amygdala is necessary for generating somatic responses to immediate reward, punishment, and conditioning, whereas the VMF is required to deploy these emotional signals during deliberation.
Limits
