Auditory arousal thresholds after selective slow-wave sleep deprivation.

What was done
Ten male subjects completed a 6-night laboratory sleep protocol consisting of 2 undisturbed adaptation nights, 1 baseline night, 2 consecutive nights of selective slow-wave sleep (SWS) deprivation using acoustic stimulation, and 1 recovery night. During the last 4 nights, subjects were awakened three times (after 2, 5, and 7.5 h of sleep) from stage 2 sleep via an ascending 1000 Hz tone series to measure auditory arousal thresholds (AATs), defined by EEG-EMG criteria as at least 10 s of alpha rhythm or movement arousal.
What was found
SWS amount was reduced to near zero during deprivation nights. The recovery night showed a significant SWS rebound and a significant increase in AATs compared to baseline. AATs showed a significant linear decrease across the night. Individual correlations between AATs and preceding SWS amount were statistically significant in 4 out of 10 subjects. Exact numerical values (e.g., sound intensity levels, sleep durations) and statistical test values were not reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
The study shows that auditory arousal thresholds track homeostatic sleep pressure and slow-wave sleep rebound following selective deprivation.
Limits
The sample size was very small (10 participants) and limited entirely to males. Numerical data, effect sizes, and exact p-values are omitted from the abstract, and individual correlations between SWS and AAT were only present in 4 of 10 subjects.
