Hangover symptoms in Asian Americans with variations in the aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2) gene.

What was done
Men and women of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean heritage (N = 140) provided blood samples for ALDH2 genotyping and reported their drinking history. Participants estimated their hangover severity on a Likert-type scale and completed a 13-item scale assessing the frequency of hangover symptoms over the previous 6 months. Abstainers (n = 17) were excluded from analysis, and models adjusted for gender and recent drinking history.
What was found
With abstainers excluded and after controlling for gender and recent drinking history, ALDH2 genotype accounted for a statistically significant amount of additional variability in estimated hangover severity scores. A five-item subscale derived from the hangover scale showed a similar but non-significant trend. The abstract does not report numerical values, effect sizes, or p-values.
Why it matters
This study suggests that heightened hangover severity among ALDH2*2 carriers may serve as an additional physiological deterrent contributing to lower rates of problematic drinking in this population.
Limits
Findings rely on retrospective 6-month self-report rather than real-time or laboratory-administered alcohol challenge measurements. The active drinking sample is modest (n = 123), and the abstract provides no specific numerical values, effect sizes, or confidence intervals.
