What was done

Chemical analysis of 35,312 cannabis preparations confiscated in the United States over an 18-year period (1980–1997) to measure concentrations of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta9-THC) and other major cannabinoids (CBD, CBN, CBC). Samples were categorized as cannabis (subdivided into loose/kilobrick/bud marijuana, sinsemilla, Thai sticks, and ditchweed), hashish, or hash oil.

What was found

Marijuana accounted for over 82% of confiscated samples in all years except 1980 (61%) and 1981 (75%). Delta9-THC potency in marijuana rose from under 1.5% in 1980 to approximately 3.3% in 1983–1984, hovered around 3% until 1992, and rose continuously from 3.1% in 1992 to 4.2% in 1997. Average delta9-THC across all cannabis samples rose from 3% in 1991 to 4.47% in 1997. Hashish and hash oil showed no distinct potency trends, and CBD, CBN, and CBC showed no significant concentration changes across the study period.

Why it matters
