What was done
The authors used an updated ethnographic compilation of plant-to-animal subsistence patterns to estimate dietary macronutrient intakes (percentage of energy) across environmentally diverse hunter-gatherer populations. They modeled how variations in prey animal body fat percentages and physiological protein ceilings would influence the consumption ratios of other macronutrients.
What was found
Whenever ecologically feasible, hunter-gatherers derived 45% to 65% of their total energy from animal foods. Overall, 73% of worldwide hunter-gatherer societies obtained >50% (≥56–65% of energy) of their subsistence from animal sources, whereas 14% obtained >50% (≥56–65% of energy) from gathered plant foods. Reconstructed macronutrient distributions showed elevated protein intakes (19–35% of energy) and relatively low carbohydrate intakes (22–40% of energy).
Why it matters
This paper provides an anthropological reference model suggesting that ancestral preagricultural diets were predominantly animal-based and moderate-to-low in carbohydrates across most non-Westernized environments.
