What was done
Thirteen normal subjects underwent the Sleep Interruption Technique to elicit sleep onset REM periods (SOREMP) and sleep onset non-REM periods (NREMP) while controlling for prior sleep length and depth. Dream occurrences and characteristics were evaluated using regression analyses and the Dream Property Scale.
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical values, effect sizes, or exact p-values. It states that SOREMP dream occurrences were significantly related to the amount of REM sleep, whereas NREMP dream occurrences were related to arousals from NREM sleep. Qualitative differences were also reported between SOREMP and NREMP dream reports on the Dream Property Scale.
Why it matters
By controlling for prior sleep duration and depth, the findings support the concept that REM and NREM dreaming are qualitatively distinct and likely produced by separate physiological mechanisms.
Limits
The sample size was very small (13 participants), and the abstract provides no numerical data, confidence intervals, or demographic details. The artificial sleep interruption technique may also alter normal sleep architecture.
