Uterine glands secrete into the intervillous space until at least 8 weeks of pregnancy, with uptake by the syncytiotrophoblast. Maternal proteins also accumulate in coelomic cavity fluid for potential transport via the secondary yolk sac, providing histiotrophic nutrition under low oxygen concentrations until haemotrophic nutrition begins at the second trimester.
Why it matters
This clarifies that human organogenesis proceeds under a low-oxygen, histiotrophic environment rather than early direct maternal blood exchange, protecting the conceptus from free-radical damage.
