It qualitatively states that gamma-tocopherol traps lipophilic electrophiles more effectively than alpha-tocopherol and is metabolized to gamma-CEHC, which possesses natriuretic activity not found in alpha-tocopherol metabolites. Both gamma-tocopherol and gamma-CEHC inhibit cyclooxygenase activity. Human and animal studies cited indicate inverse associations between plasma gamma-tocopherol concentrations and cardiovascular disease and prostate cancer. High doses of alpha-tocopherol were noted to deplete plasma and tissue gamma-tocopherol levels.
