What was done
Healthy employees in a work environment were randomized to either an 8-week clinical training program in mindfulness meditation (n = 25) or a wait-list control group (n = 16). Brain electrical activity was measured at baseline, immediately after the 8-week program, and 4 months later. At the conclusion of the 8-week intervention, participants in both groups received an influenza vaccine to assess immune response via antibody titers.
What was found
Meditators exhibited significant increases in left-sided anterior brain activation relative to nonmeditators. The meditation group also showed significant increases in antibody titers to the influenza vaccine compared to the wait-list control group. Additionally, the magnitude of increase in left-sided anterior activation predicted the magnitude of the vaccine antibody titer rise.
