Researchers evaluated whether adult hippocampal neurogenesis is necessary for the behavioral effects of chronic antidepressants using genetic and radiological methods in mice. They tested the neurogenic and behavioral responses to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine in serotonin 1A receptor knockout mice. They also applied targeted X-irradiation to a restricted brain region containing the hippocampus to ablate neurogenesis and assessed behavioral responses across two classes of antidepressants.
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical values, sample sizes, or effect sizes. Qualitatively, serotonin 1A receptor null mice were insensitive to the neurogenic and behavioral effects of fluoxetine. Targeted hippocampal X-irradiation in mice prevented the neurogenic and behavioral effects of two distinct classes of antidepressants.
