Researchers examined the medial preoptic area/anterior hypothalamus of age-matched adult sheep—including ewes, female-oriented rams, and naturally male-oriented rams (which comprise roughly 8% of rams)—to characterize the volume of a candidate sexually dimorphic nucleus (oSDN) and assess its expression of cytochrome P450 aromatase mRNA.

What was found

The oSDN was significantly larger in rams than in ewes. Among rams, the volume of the oSDN was two times greater in female-oriented rams compared with male-oriented rams. In addition, aromatase mRNA expression within the oSDN was significantly higher in female-oriented rams than in ewes, while male-oriented rams exhibited intermediate levels.
