What was done
Eight healthy adults (four men and four women) sealed inside Biosphere 2 consumed an involuntary low-calorie (average 1,780 kcal/day), low-fat (10% of calories), nutrient-dense diet grown inside the closed ecological system. Health markers measured across six months of closure were compared to baseline preclosure measurements.
What was found
Over six months, measurements changed substantially: - Weight decreased from 74 kg to 62 kg in men and from 61 kg to 54 kg in women. - Mean systolic/diastolic blood pressure decreased from 109/74 mmHg to 89/58 mmHg. - Total serum cholesterol dropped 36%, from 191 ± 11 to 123 ± 9 mg/dl (mean ± SD), while HDL dropped from 62 ± 8 to 38 ± 5 mg/dl. - Triglycerides changed from 139 to 96 mg/dl in men and from 78 to 114 mg/dl in women. - Fasting glucose fell from 92 to 74 mg/dl. - Total leukocyte count decreased from 6.7 × 10(9) to 4.7 × 10(9) cells per liter.
Why it matters
This study shows that severe caloric restriction with nutrient-dense nutrition in humans produces profound reductions in blood pressure, cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose, demonstrating physiological patterns similar to calorie-restricted animal models.
Limits
The study is limited by an extremely small sample size (n = 8) and an uncontrolled before-and-after design. The unique and complex physical environment of the sealed enclosure (including physical labor and potential atmospheric shifts) introduces confounders that cannot be isolated from the dietary restriction itself.
