Modulation of receptor-dependent increase of calcium ions in human platelets by taurine.

What was done
Human platelets were loaded with the fluorescent indicator Quin-2 to measure intracellular calcium changes in response to platelet-activating factor (PAF). Platelets were preincubated with 0.01 mol/l taurine to determine its modulating effect across different baseline calcium response ranges.
What was found
Preincubation with 0.01 mol/l taurine decreased PAF-induced intracellular calcium response by 250 nmol/l when the initial calcium response exceeded 400 nmol/l. Taurine showed no effect when initial responses were less than 150 nmol/l or between 150 and 400 nmol/l.
Why it matters
These findings suggest that taurine can modulate secondary calcium messenger signaling in human platelets during high-amplitude activation.
Limits
This is an in vitro experiment lacking clinical or in vivo verification. The abstract does not report the donor sample size, standard deviations, p-values, or dose-response testing across varying taurine concentrations.
