Researchers evaluated cardiovascular reactivity to an acute public speaking stress task in 183 healthy cohabitating adults (66 African American, 117 Caucasian; 74 women, 109 men). Prior to the stressor, the warm contact group engaged in 10 minutes of handholding with their partner while watching a romantic video, followed by a 20-second hug. The control group rested quietly for 10 minutes and 20 seconds without contact. Systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate increases were measured during the stress task.
