Ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) were immunized with recombinant modified vaccinia virus Ankara (rMVA) expressing the SARS-CoV spike (S) protein. Following vaccination, animals were challenged with SARS-CoV to evaluate neutralizing antibody kinetics and histopathological liver inflammation relative to control animals.

What was found

Following SARS-CoV challenge, immunized ferrets exhibited a more rapid and vigorous neutralizing antibody response than controls, but also developed strong inflammatory responses in liver tissue.
