What was found
Autoimmune diseases affect approximately 8% of the population, with women representing 78% of cases. In susceptible mice, coxsackievirus B3 triggered autoimmune myocarditis through elevated proinflammatory cytokine release from mast cells during the innate immune response. The same condition was induced without active infection by injecting heart proteins with adjuvant. No other quantitative figures were reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
The paper presents a mechanistic model wherein infectious triggers, mast cell-mediated innate immune activation, and sex hormones interact to drive female bias in autoimmune disease.
Limits
