Researchers evaluated the prevalence and airborne levels of *Stachybotrys* spp. across 200 homes with a history of water incursion in Houston, Texas. Environmental testing involved three sampling methods: room air sampling, surface sampling, and wall cavity air sampling.
What was found
*Stachybotrys* spp. were detected by at least one sampling method in 58.5% of tested houses, whereas only 9.6% of room air samples contained *Stachybotrys* spores. While aerosolization correlated with both wall cavity and surface contamination, wall cavity spores were not a statistically significant factor for room air detection after adjusting for surface contamination.
Why it matters
This study suggests that *Stachybotrys* spores confined within wall cavities have a limited impact on living space air quality compared to exposed surface contamination.
Limits
The study is cross-sectional and geographically restricted to Houston homes with prior water damage. The abstract reports detection percentages rather than exact spore counts, odds ratios, or confidence intervals, and it does not measure human health outcomes.
