What was done
Researchers measured the circumhoralian rhythm of protein synthesis in monolayer cultures of hepatocytes harvested from rats ranging from 1 to 24 months of age (body weight 45 to 480 g). The cell cultures were treated with the synthetic peptide livagen (Lys-Glu-Asp-Ala) or epitalon (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) to evaluate their effects on protein synthesis rates and rhythmic fluctuations across age groups.
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical values, concentrations, or statistical metrics. Livagen increased protein synthesis across all rat age groups, with the greatest effect observed in hepatocytes from old animals. In old rats, livagen also increased the amplitude of protein synthesis fluctuations. Epitalon did not alter the intensity of protein synthesis in the cultured hepatocytes.
Why it matters
The study suggests that the synthetic liver-derived peptide livagen exhibits tissue-specific stimulation of protein synthesis that varies with age, showing greater activity in older cellular environments.
Limits
