ACE genotype may have an effect on single versus multiple set preferences in strength training.

What was done
Ninety-nine Caucasian male non-elite athletes were randomly allocated to a non-training control group (n = 31), a single-set training group (n = 35), or a multiple-set training group (n = 33). Both training groups completed 6 weeks of resistance training (three sessions per week) structured into two mesocycles: 12–15 repetition maximum (RM) and 8–12 RM. One-RM loads for half squat and bench press were assessed at baseline and after each mesocycle. ACE I/D polymorphisms were determined via PCR.
What was found
The abstract reports qualitative comparisons without numerical values, confidence intervals, or p-values. Participants with the ACE II genotype in the multiple-set group had greater strength gains in the 12–15 RM mesocycle, while single-set and multiple-set groups had similar gains in the 8–12 RM mesocycle. Subjects with the ACE DD genotype had similar benefits from single-set and multiple-set programs in both mesocycles, and demonstrated superior strength gains overall in both training groups. Participants with the ACE ID genotype in the single-set group achieved gains similar to the multiple-set group with 8–12 RM loads, but not with 12–15 RM loads.
Why it matters
This study provides preliminary evidence that ACE I/D genotype may modulate responsiveness to resistance training volume and repetition ranges.
Limits
The abstract provides no raw numbers, effect sizes, or variance estimates. The sample is limited to Caucasian male non-elite athletes. Subdividing 68 active training participants across three genotypes (II, ID, DD) and two training arms yields very small subgroup sample sizes. The intervention lasted only 6 weeks.
