Vertical transmission of A. actinomycetemcomitans was estimated between 30% and 60%, whereas vertical transmission of P. gingivalis was rarely observed. Horizontal transmission between spouses ranged from 14% to 60% for A. actinomycetemcomitans and from 30% to 75% for P. gingivalis. Some evidence suggested that cohabiting with a periodontitis patient influences a spouse's periodontal status, though conclusive evidence was lacking.
