What was done

Researchers evaluated the interaction between central mu and kappa opioid receptors in thermoregulation in unrestrained rats. Animals received intracerebroventricular (icv) microinjections of the selective kappa opioid receptor antagonist nor-binaltorphimine (nor-BNI; 1.25 nmol or 25 nmol) and the selective mu opioid receptor antagonist CTAP (1.25, 5, or 10 nmol), administered either alone or sequentially (CTAP given 15 minutes after nor-BNI, or nor-BNI given before CTAP). Changes in body temperature were tracked via rectal measurements.

What was found

Low-dose nor-BNI (1.25 nmol icv) alone did not alter body temperature, but a high dose (25 nmol icv) produced an increase in body temperature. CTAP (1.25 nmol icv) significantly antagonized the nor-BNI-induced temperature elevation. Additionally, CTAP alone at 5 or 10 nmol significantly reduced body temperature, an effect that was blocked by pre-treatment with 1.25 nmol nor-BNI.
