Female prairie voles were evaluated for social partner preferences (familiar partner versus a stranger) across experimental conditions assessing cohabitation duration (6 hours versus at least 24 hours), mating status, and central oxytocin infusion with or without estrogen priming.
What was found
Cohabitation for at least 24 hours produced partner preferences without requiring mating. After 6 hours of cohabitation, females showed partner preferences only if they mated during cohabitation (Experiment 2) or received oxytocin infusions (Experiment 3). Females that continued mating during preference testing (n = 4) mated exclusively with the familiar partner. Oxytocin facilitated preference formation even without mating or estrogen priming. Numerical preference durations and variance metrics were not reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
This study provides evidence that central oxytocin facilitates selective pair-bonding in female prairie voles, modeling the neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying social attachment.
Limits
Findings are limited to a non-human animal model (female prairie voles) and cannot be directly extrapolated to human attachment behavior. Total sample sizes, oxytocin dosages, delivery routes, and quantitative effect sizes are omitted from the abstract, with only one sub-group sample size specified (n = 4).
