The abstract reports no numerical data or effect sizes. Qualitatively, women have shorter auditory brainstem response (ABR) latencies than men, postmenopausal women on hormone replacement therapy show slightly better hearing, and women with Turner syndrome show longer ABR latencies and early presbyacusis. In animal models, estrogen receptor beta knockout mice develop severe progressive hearing loss, whereas midshipman fish alter inner ear mechanisms in response to sex steroids. Conversely, case reports link hormone therapy and oral contraceptive use with acute sudden deafness.
Why it matters
Understanding the mechanism of estrogen and its receptor subtypes in the inner ear may clarify sex differences in age-related hearing loss and highlight potential targets for hearing preservation.
Limits
The abstract provides no sample sizes, effect sizes, or confidence intervals. The human data are restricted to observational associations and isolated case reports, and mechanisms underlying contradictory reports of hormone-induced sudden deafness remain unclear.
