What was done
Healthy men and women underwent [11C]raclopride positron emission tomography (PET) scans with a reference tissue approach to compare baseline striatal dopamine binding potential and dopamine release after amphetamine and placebo challenges. Subjective drug effects and plasma cortisol and growth hormone responses were also measured.
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical values, effect sizes, or test statistics. Baseline dopamine binding potential did not differ between sexes. Men showed markedly greater dopamine release than women in the ventral striatum and in three of four secondary striatal regions after amphetamine challenge. Subjective ratings of positive drug effects were higher in men than in women. Neuroendocrine hormone responses showed no sex differences.
Why it matters
This is initial human in vivo evidence of a sex difference in evoked striatal dopamine release, providing a potential neurobiological basis for differential male vulnerability to stimulant use disorders.
Limits
The abstract omits participant sample size, age range, dosing details, and exact statistical values. The study examined acute pharmacological challenge in healthy volunteers, which may not fully generalize to clinical addiction populations.
