What was done
Fifteen-month-old infants were familiarized with an artificial language 4 hours prior to a laboratory testing visit. Learning involved relating initial and final words in auditory strings, either by encoding exact word dependencies or extracting an abstract relationship between them. One group of infants napped during the 4-hour retention interval, while a control group remained awake, followed by testing of memory and generalization.
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical values, effect sizes, or test statistics. Qualitatively, infants who napped demonstrated retention of an abstract relation that they successfully generalized to novel, similar stimuli. Infants who did not nap demonstrated memory for the familiarized stimuli without showing generalization.
