Structural MRI and neuropsychological assessments were used to compare licensed London taxi drivers to London bus drivers. The two groups were matched for driving experience and stress levels, isolating spatial navigation demands (flexible route planning versus fixed routes). The study evaluated regional hippocampal gray matter volume and the acquisition of new visuo-spatial information, as well as the correlation between navigation experience and brain structure.

What was found

Compared to bus drivers, taxi drivers demonstrated greater gray matter volume in the mid-posterior hippocampi and lower gray matter volume in the anterior hippocampi. Years of navigation experience correlated with hippocampal gray matter volume exclusively in taxi drivers (right posterior volume increased and anterior volume decreased with more experience).
