Three years after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City, researchers assessed behavioral recall and functional brain imaging in participants who were in Downtown Manhattan (close to the World Trade Center) versus Midtown (a few miles away) during the attacks. Participants retrieved memories of 9/11 as well as personally selected control events from 2001 while undergoing brain imaging.
What was found
Participants who were Downtown during the attacks exhibited selective amygdala activation and reported emotionally enhanced recollective experiences when recalling 9/11 compared to control events. In contrast, Midtown participants did not show selective amygdala activation or enhanced recollective experiences. The abstract reports no quantitative values, effect sizes, or participant counts.
